We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Contract Routing Design Engineer to join our specialist design team. This is a hands-on technical role focused on the design, routing, and integration of complex systems within our portfolio of marine craft
**Solidworks is essential**
You will be instrumental in translating system requirements and P&ID diagrams into production-ready 3D models and manufacturing packages, ensuring all fluid and electrical systems are routed optimally for performance, maintenance, and manufacturability.
Key Responsibilities
-
3D Routing and Modelling:
-
Design and route mechanical, fluid (e.g., fuel, hydraulic, seawater), and electrical systems (cabling/harnesses) using Solidworks
-
Develop and modify 3D models and large assemblies for all vessel systems, particularly within confined spaces like engine rooms and technical compartments.
-
-
Technical Documentation:
-
Interpret and apply Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and wiring schematics to create accurate 3D system layouts.
-
Produce detailed technical drawing packs suitable for manufacturing and assembly, including installation guides.
-
Create and maintain accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) and component libraries.
-
-
Design for Manufacture (DFM):
-
Apply DFM principles to optimise routing designs for ease of fabrication, assembly, and practical access for maintenance.
-
Collaborate directly with the workshop and production teams to troubleshoot installation issues and implement immediate, practical design fixes.
-
-
Quality & Compliance:
-
Ensure all designs comply with relevant marine classification society rules (e.g., Lloyd’s Register, DNV-GL) and industry standards.
-
Manage design data, version control, and change management using the company’s PDM/PLM system.
-
Required Skills & Experience
-
Direct experience within the marine, vessel, naval, or a closely related heavy engineering sector (e.g., oil & gas, aerospace) is essential.
-
Expert proficiency in 3D CAD software, with specific advanced experience in Solidworks and Solidworks Routing
-
Experience in generating detailed manufacturing drawing packages, including weldment and fabricated component drawings.
-
Familiarity with various marine materials, including knowledge of working with aluminium structures and welding standards is highly beneficial.
-
Ability to work effectively on an independent basis, managing design workload to meet tight project deadlines.
Personal Attributes
-
Highly detail-oriented with a meticulous approach to complex routing and documentation.
-
Proactive and practical problem-solver, comfortable spending time on the production floor to validate and refine designs.
-
Excellent communication skills, capable of liaising effectively with suppliers, engineers, and production staff.
