Q&A with Matthew Elliott From The MTA

  • Posted

Following the recent announcement of our training and development partnership with the Maritime Training Academy, we asked Matthew Elliott, Global Account Manager, a bit more about the MTA and its courses, why you would want to undertake an MTA course and the future career potential following completion.

How long have you worked for the MTA and what is it that gives you such passion to represent them and sell their courses?

I have worked at MTA now for 5 years and enjoy it more every day. I take pride in selling our courses because it is a product that I truly believe in. I see everyday how our courses can help students and it is great seeing them progress through the ranks post studying. One of the job highlights is traveling around the world to yacht shows and being able to represent the company and meet our students. We focus on providing a personal service and try to go that extra mile for our clients and students.

On average, how many courses do the MTA run each year and how many individuals enrol on them?

We currently have 26 Diploma courses and a number of short courses. Our student numbers vary depending on the course, we get up to 60 students each year on our Diplomas. Each course has an annual start date, there is always a good time to enrol and begin studying.

Do you find that course attendees come from a specific area of the industry?

Mainly onboard, we have a huge number of students studying with us who are either looking to study something such as Superyacht Operations to improve their knowledge and learn more about the onboard operations involved. Or, we have a lot of students onboard who are looking to move into a shore based role within the near future and study anyone of our shore based Diploma courses.

An example being a Captain who has worked onboard for 15 years, who is now looking to be closer to home and study the Superyacht Management Diploma. They can achieve their goal of moving shoreside, but at the same time be able to put their onboard experience to good use. That experience will ideally help in their future role, but will also help in whichever course they choose.

What is your most popular course?

We have a lot of courses throughout the maritime industry, they range from Maritime Law to Maritime Firefighting. Currently our Superyacht courses are proving to be the most popular. The two courses that get the most attention are Superyacht Management and Yacht Brokerage.

You have some incredible lecturers on your courses from all corners of the industry. Do you also work with governing bodies and recognised industry associations to ensure that your courses remain current and in line with wider qualifications?

We know how important it is for our students to have a qualification that they feel will help within their career, meaning recognition is an important aspect when it comes to choosing which training provider and which course to study. Our Course Authors and Directors are all working within the industry so they know the information that our students need.

Because of this, we have a lot of support. Our superyacht courses are recognized by various leading companies such as Camper & Nicholson, Burgess, RINA, IMAREST, PYA, Ocean Independence. We have many students working for the biggest yachting companies who value the support we are able to give and reputation an MTA Diploma carries within the industry.

What can a course attendee expect from an MTA course in terms of learning, support and post-course career opportunities?

Students will enjoy full support throughout their course. It is up to the student to make time for their studies and they will need to dedicate a good amount of time to complete the course. However, we have a Training team on hand who are dedicated to giving the student support. There is always someone that the student can reach out to whether that is over the phone or via email.

We are there to help if the student needs help, or if they simply want to reach out for some advice. We also give our students access to our LinkedIn group and Facebook community, this gives them a platform to reach out to other students on their course. It is great for networking and we have had students find their current job roles based on these groups.

What do you offer in terms of pre-course and post-course careers support?

We offer advice and can help a student pick the right course for them in the initial stages, and our Training team are on hand throughout the students journey when completing their course. But, post-course we are always looking for ways to improve our service, which is why we are very excited to work with SYR.  We feel this will benefit our students massively and offer them that post-course career support that we know they are looking for.

Do you find that having an MTA course on a CV is leading to candidates enjoying a higher chance of success?

From our point of view, it’s a simple yes. I am very lucky in the fact that I get to travel around the world and meet with various yacht management companies, crew agencies, shipyard manager etc. When I speak with them, the feedback I get is that they take candidates very seriously if they have an MTA Diploma. We can’t promise students their dream jobs, but we can provide a course that will help their careers and certainly lead to more opportunities within the industry, and get that dream job! Whether that is progressing their superyacht career, or helping them get their first role within the industry.

Mid & Late career retraining and upskilling is becoming more and more popular, especially in the post-COVID era. Do you see a lot of your course attendees looking to bolster their skills within their existing role, or taking part on a course on the basis of seeking new employment?

We have all types of individuals on our courses at various stages of their career, we have students who are new to the industry and looking to find their first job role within the industry, they may be struggling to find that role so they are looking to show potential employers their commitment to self-development by studying our courses. We also have individuals who have many years of experience within the industry and are now looking for an industry recognized qualification to add on their CV alongside their experience.

We also have individuals who are enjoying retirement and simply like to read our course material. Our courses are updated annually with any changes and developments that are happening within the industry, so a lot of student’s study with us to simply update themselves on the latest industry knowledge.

What’s in the pipeline for the MTA moving forwards in terms of product offering?

We are always looking on ways that we can improve a students experience with us. We are always looking at how advances in technology can help a students ability to learn. Added to this, we always take feedback from our students very seriously. We are often asking our students which courses they would like us to bring out next, so we are regularly bringing out new courses and looking to find new Authors/Directors who can help with new course material.

If you’d like to know more about the SYR/MTA partnership or indeed about job placements then please contact SYR at hello@superyachtrecruiter.com

New SYR & UKSA Partnership

New SYR & UKSA Partnership – promoting and safeguarding the future of yachting

An often overlooked but highly important aspect of yachting is ‘How do we keep on attracting people into our industry’. More to the point, how early do we start sowing the seeds with young people that a career in yachting is the one for them?

In a world that is becoming ever more digital and where you can make far more money from the comfort of your home office, yachting has a fight on its hands to attract individuals from all walks of life to fill an increasing demand for maritime products and services.

As shoreside specialists, SYR should be focussed on higher education and promoting training in areas such as design, naval architecture or manufacturing. However we realise that the seeds of yachting need to be sown much earlier than this, hence our decision to partner with the UKSA over period of three years with the aim of sponsoring and supporting young people, particularly from diverse backgrounds, to discover and hopefully go on to a maritime career.

Historically, yachting jobs have been staffed by individuals from specific class and race backgrounds. UKSA, one of the biggest charities in maritime, are working hard to change this demographic through the sponsorship and training of young people alongside fully supporting maritime cadetships for those who maybe cannot afford to undergo training through their own means. As a result, we’re starting to see more and more diversity in maritime jobseekers here in the UK and an increase in UK candidates being placed across maritime careers.

SYR are working with UKSA in two ways. First, supporting the training and development of young people, but secondly, offering a careers advisory outpost for those looking to come ashore after many years at sea.

Almost as hard as getting to sea in the first place, the transition from the transient and often lucrative world of seafaring  back to land life can be a challenge, one that there are few sources of advice from.

SYR as a business have specialised in careers advice for seafarers coming ashore since our inception and its hoped that our expertise in this area will lead to placement of ex-seafarers into roles in disciplines such as yacht management, brokerage, sales and much more where the people, time and discipline skills learnt will allow jobseekers to secure excellent onwards employment.

Using combined social media reach of well over 100,000 followers, the partnership will act to increase awareness of maritime careers alongside the financial support that is being provided.

If you’d like to find out more about the SYR/UKSA partnership or shoreside job placements contact SYR at hello@superyachtrecruiter.com

Monaco Yacht Show Report

Monaco Yacht Show Report

Monaco….One of the most elite places on the planet and one the smallest principalities in the world. Home to the rich and famous…… and the annual Monaco Yacht Show.

For anyone working in large yachts, its the place to be for the summer and for 4 days a year, the entire yachting supply chain converge on this tiny place to celebrate the near-unobtainable, catch up with each other and enjoy a party or two.

The SYR team are no strangers to the show, with our CEO have attended since 2015 and the company returning for its second year. Could 2022 surpass the successes of the first post-covid gathering in 2021?

Put simply……yes!

With Ed, Simon and Lauren in attendance, we had excellent coverage across brokerage, management, design and manufacturing and collectively covered close to 100km on foot to meet clients both existing and new to discuss hiring plans for the coming months.

Utilising our recently announced partnership with Paul Gray and Optimus Marine, we were able to cross-promote each other, with both parties making introductions that have already led to new business being won, alongside discussing some of our wider non-recruitment plans which are already gaining traction from across the market.

The common theme amongst all is that yachting remains hugely busy, even following the major sanctions imposed on many owners earlier this year. The industry shows continued growth and this is fuelling the need for recruitment in almost all areas, not to replace but to increase headcount to cope with demand.

A few stats to whet your appetite:

  • 25 new roles across sales and charter brokerage
  • 20+ new roles in yacht management
  • 5 new roles in OEM sales
  • 50+ skilled trades workers required across 5 businesses
  • 3 placements made with clients present at the show

SYR continues to expand its presence too, with our expertise being highly valued across the market and our knowledge driven approach resonating well with the industry. We used the show to discuss incredible new partnership opportunities too, which will both reflect our values as a business and assist us in refining and improving our recruitment service offerings.

As we move into the final quarter of 2022, we see an incredible pipeline of business that we expect will run well into next year and are looking to capitalise on this in order to continue our growth as an organisation, driving change across the industry.

We of course have some yachting highlights from the show. Lurssen Yachts Ahpo of course stole the show, however we also loved Baltic Yachts Perseverance, the Mangusta 165, the recently refitted Broadwater and not forgetting Falcon Yachts incredible tender Miss Leblanc!

We’d like to thank some of the incredible industry businesses for their hospitality and assistance too:

Fraser Yachts for inviting us to their 75th Celebrations

Boat International for their ongoing support and invitation to their Friday event

Falcon Tenders, from providing us with our show tickets

X Shore, for kindly taking us for a sea trial on their groundbreaking One

Superyacht Content, for some great discussions and some exciting future plans

Optimus Marine (Paul Gray) for acting as an ambassador for SYR and working with us to make positive changes to the industry

Yacht Club de Monaco for providing some breathtaking views at the various evening gatherings

And we’re sure there are countless more…

Quality Candidate data drives results

Quality Candidate Data Drives Results

Let’s face it, data cleansing can be a beast of a problem. How many of us have worked for a company that only took the issue seriously once it had become a serious hand-wringer, leaving staff frustrated and impacting results? Too many, I’d guess. When things get out of hand, a database can behave like an out-of-control juggernaut… if you let it.

I’ve heard companies extolling the virtues of their database or CRM to anyone willing to listen, based on nothing more than the supposedly vast number of records it’s holding. I suppose if you can get away with such an argument these days then well done you, but come on, don’t most of us realise the true test of the data is how current it is, how manageable it is, and whether it can be manipulated to produce the results you need for quick on-going actions? It’s not how big it is, it’s how you use it!

The joy of SYR’s database is that as the company is relatively young, and knowing what we know about data, we’ve been able to employ good data management techniques from the outset, alleviating the awful issues which would take many man hours and much head scratching to put right.

Keeping control of the data includes things that can be easy to do, as long as you have the will to do them and see their importance, such as:

. Regular contact with candidates, to ensure current statuses are recorded.

. Maintaining records to reflect changing circumstances, desired work locations, updated skills and work experience.

. Understanding the motivation of a candidate to change jobs, to ensure a good fit with a prospective new employer.

Keeping the data clean and current makes SYR agile, able to respond to client requests and the search for new live job roles, with minimal fuss and disruption. Once a job brief is discussed with our team, fully understanding the role in question, the search criteria can easily be entered in to the database search parameters and often qualified candidates are returned speedily. The added benefit being that as there is such an onus put on our keeping in contact with candidates, it’s highly likely that our team will have candidates in mind before even searching the database.

Clients generally want a speedy resolution to their recruiting headaches. We are able to drill down to the nth degree, highlighting and isolating candidates that most closely fit the criteria, making the process as streamlined as possible. Although all candidates are also contacted and re-qualified before being put to the clients for consideration, we are rightly proud of the speedily efficient yet thorough processes we have in place.

SYR has just passed the milestone of 2000 live candidates registered on our database, which we are rightfully proud of. Yes, there’ll be others out there with more records, but will they know their candidates as well as SYR?

So, if you’re a candidate, rest assured that if you have the right skills for a job, you’ll be found in our database searches. However, if you’d like to chat to one of our team about any changes in your circumstances or if you’re now considering your job options, please get in contact at hello@superyachtrecruiter.com with an up-to-date CV, when one of our team will get back to you.
